Comprehensive CRO research examines both:

On-Page Factors: Elements on competitor landing pages—visual hierarchy, contrast patterns, layout architecture, copy frameworks, trust signal placement, form design, CTA optimization, mobile patterns, pricing presentation, and dozens more.

Off-Page Factors: Ecosystem context—brand authority, unit economics (AOV, margin, LTV), SERP position viability, pricing positioning relative to market, ad copy patterns, and competitive dynamics.

Which factors matter most varies by industry and by client. Research determines relevance. Generic advice assumes universal importance; research reveals actual importance for this specific situation.

On-page research tells you WHAT patterns exist. Off-page research tells you WHICH patterns are relevant to your client. Both are required.

The Behavioral Science Behind Each Stage

Stage 0: The Ad (Scent Creation)

Before the page loads, the user has clicked an ad promising 'Best Food Sensitivity Test Kits 2025.' This creates:

Prospective memory: An intention formed, expecting fulfillment

Cognitive commitment: Sunk cost initiated—they have invested a click

The user arrives with a search image. They need instant confirmation or they bounce.

Stage 1: Hero Copy—Why Low Contrast Works

The hero reads 'The Best Food Sensitivity Test Kits in 2025' at 2.0-2.1 contrast. This violates WCAG accessibility guidelines. It also converts.

The 'Most Popular' badge at 4.2 contrast activates:

At 5-6 contrast, the badge would demand evaluation: 'Says who? Prove it.' At 4.2, the anchor is planted subconsciously.

The brand logo at 4.0-4.3 contrast maintains the soft entry established by badge and hero. At this contrast level:

Familiarity Heuristic: Users process familiar brands with less cognitive effort. The low contrast allows recognition without triggering brand evaluation.

Emotional Continuity: The near-identical contrast to the badge (4.3 vs 4.2) creates seamless visual flow. No jarring transitions that would activate analytical thinking.

Trust Baseline: The user registers 'I know who this is' without asking 'Do I trust them?' That question comes later—after features have been processed and the rating has provided social validation.

A high-contrast logo would demand attention and evaluation at the wrong moment. At 4.0-4.3, it establishes identity as context rather than claim.

Stage 4: Features—The Decision Zone

Features require active cognitive processing. This is where the user shifts from peripheral processing to central route processing (Elaboration Likelihood Model). They are actually evaluating arguments.

The 7-9 contrast is the minimum required for effortful processing without strain. Each feature is a mental checkbox:

Discreet—'I do not want embarrassment'

Fast results—'I do not want to wait anxiously'

Comprehensive—'I want to know everything'

Support if positive—'I am scared of bad news'

Payment flexibility—'I want this easy'

Why not higher than 9? Features at 12+ would compete with the rating climax, create visual fatigue, and make the section feel promotional. The features must be subordinate to the trust payoff that follows.

Stage 5: Rating—The Trust Climax

The 9.9 rating at 15-16 contrast is the designed emotional peak. Everything prior was setup—this is release.

Social Proof Payoff: The user processed features rationally. Now they receive emotional validation: 'Everyone agrees.'

Dopamine Spike: The high contrast creates a visual event. The brain registers: 'This is important. This is positive. Search complete.'

Commitment and Consistency (Cialdini): User has clicked an ad, accepted 'Most Popular' framing, evaluated features. The rating locks it in. To not click now would create cognitive dissonance.

The 15-16 contrast ensures the rating is impossible to miss. The entire sequence depends on trust being established before the ask.

Stage 6: Button—The Behavioral Release

This is where conventional CRO advice fails completely. The button at 2.9 contrast exploits:

Reactance Avoidance (Brehm, 1966): When people feel autonomy threatened, they resist. A high-contrast button screaming 'CLICK ME' triggers reactance—'Am I being manipulated?' At 2.9, the button does not register as a sales element.

Zeigarnik Effect: Incomplete tasks create psychological tension demanding closure. The user has an open loop: ad -> page -> evaluate -> decide -> ???. The low-contrast button is the path of least resistance to closing the loop.

Decision Fatigue Exploitation: After processing features and experiencing the rating climax, cognitive resources are depleted. A loud button would require energy they do not have. The 2.9 button requires zero additional processing.

Peak-End Rule (Kahneman): Experiences are remembered by their peak and their end. Peak: 16-contrast rating (positive, intense). End: Effortless click (smooth, frictionless). User remembers: 'I felt confident and it was easy.'

Agency Preservation: The click must feel like the user's choice. Low contrast preserves the illusion: the rating says 'This is trustworthy,' the button says nothing—it just exists. The user thinks: 'I have decided to click.'

The button does not convert. The rating converts. The button just catches what falls.

The conversion mechanism is not about individual contrast values—it is about the differential between trust signal and action element.

How This Applies Beyond Affiliate Sites

This case study comes from affiliate review sites—comparison pages with badges, rankings, and multiple products. Your landing page may look nothing like this. The methodology still transfers.

A brand landing page does not have 'Most Popular' badges or competitor comparisons. But it has equivalent elements that follow the same psychological arc:

Trust signals (testimonials, certifications, reviews) play the role of the rating climax

Value propositions (features, benefits) play the role of the features list

Hero messaging plays the role of scent confirmation

CTAs still need to catch what the trust signals convert

The specific contrast ratios shown here apply to this vertical. In your vertical, the numbers will differ. The methodology is what transfers: map patterns across hyper-relevant competitors, identify the invariant elements, establish the baseline. Every vertical has its own equivalent of the rating-to-button differential—research reveals what it is.

Off-Page Factors That Shape On-Page Requirements

The contrast case study demonstrates on-page research depth. But on-page patterns do not exist in a vacuum. Off-page factors—brand authority, unit economics, competitive positioning—determine which on-page strategies are viable and which competitor patterns are relevant to study.

In the health testing case study, we analyzed competitors at similar authority levels. A high-authority brand like Forbes Health (national advertising) can use different landing page strategies than a challenger brand. The converged pattern we identified came from competitors at comparable market positions—not from copying the market leader whose brand equity allows different approaches.

This is why off-page research is required alongside on-page analysis.

Brand Authority

Brand authority affects what landing page strategies are viable.

Consider two competitors in the online divorce vertical:

onlinedivorce.com—Established brand with search volume on their name. Users arrive with baseline familiarity. Their landing page can go straight to a quiz asking for action. No trust-building preamble needed. The brand equity was built before the click.

divorcefiller.com—Lesser-known brand. Users arrive skeptical: 'Who is this?' Their landing page requires a trust-building layer before asking for commitment. Going straight to a quiz would trigger abandonment.

Same vertical. Same user need. Radically different landing page requirements—determined entirely by off-page brand authority.

But the threshold varies by industry. In some verticals, even unknown brands can be aggressive. In others, trust-building is mandatory regardless of authority. Research determines where the client sits on this spectrum and which competitor patterns are relevant to their authority level.

Unit Economics and Competitive Positioning

Competitor unit economics—AOV, margin, LTV—affect which competitors are relevant to study.

A competitor with 70% margins bidding in SERP position #1 faces different conversion challenges than a challenger with 40% margins in position #3. The user psychology may differ—position #3 users may have already visited other sites. The viable landing page strategies differ.

But how much this matters varies dramatically by industry. In some verticals, SERP position psychology is a major factor. In others, it is negligible.

This is why research is required. You cannot assume which off-page factors matter. You must analyze the market to determine what is relevant for this client, in this vertical, at this competitive position.

Search Intent: The Given You Cannot Change

Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines define intent taxonomy: dominant intent (what most users want) and common intents (significant minority interpretations). For commercial queries, the dominant intent is almost always purchase-oriented.

The Convergence Problem

Google's close variant expansion means all keyword variants converge to the same auction:

'best food sensitvity test' matches 'top food sensitvity testing kits'

Advertisers cannot escape competition through keyword selection

Everyone ends up in the same auction for the same psychology

You cannot differentiate on intent capture. Everyone gets the same intent. Competition becomes about:

CPC efficiency: Bid strategy, quality score, ad relevance

On-page conversion: Your landing page patterns—the on-page factors research reveals

Competitive positioning: Your offer, pricing, and brand authority—the off-page factors research must account for

This is why landing page optimization is the primary competitive lever. Traffic acquisition is a commodity—everyone bids on the same keywords. Conversion rate is the differentiator.

Ad Copy to Landing Page Continuity

Users arrive from Google Ads with expectations set by your ad copy. The landing page must honor those promises within seconds.

If your ad says 'Results in 48 Hours,' that claim must be visible above the fold. If your ad emphasizes 'Discreet Shipping,' that feature needs prominence. Mismatch between ad promise and landing page confirmation creates immediate trust erosion—the user wonders if they clicked the wrong link.

This is why CRO research examines ad copy alongside landing pages. The scent match between click source and landing is a conversion factor. Research must identify what promises competitors make in their ads and how their landing pages honor those promises.

Strategic Implications

The contrast case study illustrates principles that apply across all CRO variables. Here is how to operationalize competitive research methodology:

1. Competitive Research Is Non-Negotiable

Before testing any hypothesis, you must understand what winning sites in your vertical have discovered. For contrast, this meant mapping visual hierarchy. But the same discipline applies to every variable:

  • Contrast mapping of top 10 performers
  • Layout and structure analysis
  • Copy framework deconstruction
  • Trust signal placement patterns
  • Form and CTA design conventions
  • Mobile optimization approaches
  • Pricing and offer presentation

The goal is identifying which elements are invariant across winners (do not test—just match) vs. variable (test aggressively—opportunity for differentiation).

2. Match the Converged Pattern First, Then Experiment

If your current design deviates from converged patterns, your first priority should be matching the baseline—not innovating. Innovation comes after you have captured what the market has already discovered.

In our case study, research identified that the client's redesign deviated from converged patterns. The recommended fix was returning to the baseline:

  • Badge: 5-6 → 4.2 (soften entry)
  • Rating: 7 → 15-16 (restore climax—this is the critical fix)
  • Button: 6 → 2.9 (restore release)

Note: Features at 9 were within the converged range (7-9), so no change was required there. The problem was the inverted hierarchy—Rating at 7 was weaker than Features at 9. Once Rating is restored to 15-16, the proper climax-to-evaluation contrast differential is re-established.

3. Distill to 2-3 Hyper-Relevant Competitors

Comprehensive research analyzes the market broadly—10-15 competitors to understand patterns. But actionable pattern matching comes from identifying 2-3 competitors that are hyper-relevant to the client's situation:

  • Similar brand authority level
  • Comparable unit economics and pricing tier
  • Competing for same SERP positions
  • Targeting same audience segment

'What do winners do?' is too broad. 'What do winners who look like us do?' is the actionable question.

The research process: Analyze the market to understand patterns. Then distill to 2-3 hyper-relevant competitors for specific pattern matching. This is where implementation specs come from.

4. Understand Your Competitive Context

Your landing page requirements depend on factors beyond the page itself:

Brand authority: Can you ask for action immediately, or must you build trust first?

Unit economics: Which SERP positions can you sustainably afford? Who are your actual competitors at that position?

Offer positioning: Are you premium, mid-market, or value? Each requires different objection handling.

Research must identify competitors at comparable authority and economics. Studying what works for a market leader with 70% margins is not actionable if you are a challenger with 40% margins competing in a different SERP position.

5. Use Research to Prioritize Your Testing Roadmap

Competitive research does not just reveal what to test—it reveals what not to test. This is equally valuable.

When you discover that all top 10 performers use the same trust signal placement, you know that variable is settled. Do not waste tests on it—just match the proven pattern and move on.

When you discover variation across winners—some use pricing anchors, others do not—you have identified a genuine testing opportunity. These variables justify experimentation because the market has not converged on a single answer.

Research-driven test prioritization:

Invariant elements (100% consistency across winners): Match immediately. Do not test. Your baseline.

High-variance elements (significant differences across winners): Prioritize for A/B testing. Market has not solved this.

Your current deviations from invariants: Highest priority. You are likely leaving money on the table.

This is how you achieve a high win rate on A/B tests. You are not guessing—you are testing variations within a proven framework.

Industry data shows A/B tests have a 20-30% win rate. Most tests fail. Why? Because most tests are based on hypotheses that competitors have already tested and rejected—or on 'best practices' that do not apply to the specific vertical and competitive context.

Research changes the equation:

Tests against the baseline (matching converged patterns) have high likelihood of success—you are implementing what the market has already validated

Tests on high-variance elements are genuine experiments—the market has not converged, so there is real opportunity to find advantage

Tests that deviate from invariant patterns can be identified and avoided before wasting resources

In our case study, research identified that a client's redesign deviated from converged patterns in ways likely to hurt conversion. They avoided a wasted test. That is the value of research—not just finding what to test, but finding what not to test.

Research does not guarantee wins. It improves the odds by ensuring you are not testing hypotheses the market has already answered.
